The Jivamukti Yoga method is a style of Yoga created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in 1984. It is a vigorously physical and intellectually stimulating practice leading to spiritual awareness. The Jivamukti Yoga Centers are places for spiritual gathering that offer vigorous Hatha Yoga classes with an emphasis on the Source teachings from such ancient texts as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Upanishads. Each class focuses on a theme, which is supported by Sanskrit chanting, readings, references to scriptural texts, music, spoken word, asana sequencing and yogic breathing practices.
"We chose the name Jivamukti (pronounced Jee-va-mook-tee) Yoga to reflect the true aim of yoga, which is liberation. Jiva means individual soul and mukti means liberation. The exact transliteration of the Sanskrit word from which Jiavmukti is derived is jivanmuktih, which means liberation while living. The name Jivamukti Yoga reflects the fact that it is possible to have a beneficial and fulfilling life in the world, and also progress spiritually-perhaps even attaining liberation (Samadhi) while living." - Sharon Gannon and David Life, Jivamukti Yoga.
We particularly recommend Yogeswari’s classes. Part dancer, part philosopher, all yogi. Yogeswari the ultimate leader of breath counted vinyasa across the globe. In her classes you will never ever miss a beat, and will always have more than one bead of sweat. One of my first teachers, she holds true to the jivamukti lineage while always teaching something for your mind as well, be it about yoga philosophy, sanskrit, or life. Her classes should be a weekly norm if only she didn't have so many people to teach around the world!
